«DEATH-ENABLED»
Spoiler [Show]

A family milled about the kitchen of their modest farm house on the far outskirts of Vale. Set in a quaint field, the house was a charming two-story affair surrounded by a now empty field. That field had been worked and harvested by the same family just that morning, from the break of dawn to the setting of the sun, and even working into the very brim of the moonless, starless night until everything was settled. Now, they sat down for a well-deserved meal, each of the five of them—mother, father, two sons, and daughter—weary but proud of their accomplishments for the day.

The cleared, once-tilled fields now flat, the farm house stood as an edifice of human achievement, resolute and strong in the darkness that surrounded it... the darkness that encroached upon it.

Some hours later, the Beowolves finished their snooping around the kitchen, interest waning as the four bodies of the family slowly grew cold. The pack slowly drifted, moving not quite together back into the surrounding woods.

The fifth body, the eldest child, crawled. For what felt like hours, she crawled, the last surviving member of her family, the eldest child remembering the scenes of her younger brothers, her mother and father, and the Grimm that had invaded their home. There was a similar farm to her own a few miles out. If she could make it there in time, perhaps she could stave off the cruel hand of fate from taking their lives as well. If only she could crawl faster than the Beowolves could travel...

Ciel had been one of the few who'd accepted the mission, clearing out a Grimm swarm that's been growing in size over the past few days and more importantly evacuating any citizens caught in the mess. Of course, this was one of her first real missions, and whilst the girl has fought Grimm as part of the initiation... she was certainly still very nervous about this. Currently with only one of her pistols, the Stray Cats, drawn, she'd carefully sneaked through the area, stumbling across a house on a farm, a deep fear had welled up inside her. She wasn't sure why she was scared, but she knew she had to go inside, it was a Huntress' job to protect the people, and one cannot protect the people if they avoid finding them. She'd opened the door, peering inside hesitantly, everything was quiet, too quiet.

Ciel felt she need to get this done quickly, on edge and frightened to the point that her tail couldn't rest easily, she'd hurried to check through all the rooms, one by one, checking her sides, making sure nothing could sneak up behind her. There was fire in her eyes, despite her fears, she refused to let anything happen today. It was the final room downstairs that she had checked. The kitchen, Ciel had burst out from the door frame like she had with every other, readying her pistol to take on any oncoming threats like she had learnt to, and nearly dropping it after witnessing the aftermath. Her eyes were averted instantly, the odor was powerful, and whilst she felt weak-kneed and wanted to vomit, to cry, she held back. The kitten certainly wasn't ready for this, to look at the work of Death after a life of peacefulness, however, her resolve had not faltered. She was determined to carry through the mission, and willed herself to stray from the kitchen to every other room in the home, checking upstairs all the same, her feelings conflicted seeing empty beds, left out toys, something inside her felt like screaming in terror and never coming back.

Ciel's hope and determination had begun to wane, was there anybody alive here? She'd looked out the closest window worrying about the Grimm when she'd spotted a little girl crawling across the field. In a complete rush of hope and other emotions, Ciel scrambled out from the farm house to get to the girl.

(( pls no r.i.p.erino, I love my kitten too much ;A; ))

Did she never think before she spoke?

Dawning her usual combat attire, Iodi had almost been dragged into this mission since Adalene accepted it. Her matching crimson corset and gauntlets stood out as she wore brown, slightly baggy trousers to hide her tail. Adalene was never the best at considering her surroundings, well unless there was a guy in the vicinity. The mission had said there was quite a number of Grimm around this area so they had to be on their guard. Not just yelling out as they arrive.

The agricultural areas where not that densely populated so hopefully not many had been on the receiving end of this spike in Grimm. Though just looking at the farm house from the outside realised that there was still going to have been someone that had felt the blunt of it. Her weapons still attached to her belt she was slowly following being Ada, turned to almost be in a back-to back position. As they crossed the doorway the first thing that hit you was the smell.

Death.

The stench seemed to filter through the house. Not enough to feel like it is embedded into the house but it was still easily noticeable. It had not been the first time that she had smelt it before, though that time was a bit of an accident when she was a child. Reason why not to have a take your daughter to work day with her father. However, when it came to be actually seeing someone dead then that was a different matter. She kept saying to herself that she would be ready but nothing prepared her for when she arrived at the kitchen.

The devastation that she saw as she stepped into the room. It was unspeakable. The Grimm where known to be merciless but this was the first time that she had seen it when involving the deaths of others. Being a second year, going though that whole year looked that it meant nothing in that instant. She had a job to do though and all she could do was feel sorry for the family that had lost their lives.

The roar of the engine under Nick and his sister, Eta, rang out into the surrounding area. While he didn't have to many things to say he had over his older brother, he did have his motorcycle, something he managed to buy himself with some hard work. And boy did it come in hand. During this little family holiday, his father had been his normal self, and was riding him repeatedly about his grades and comparing him to his brother, over and over again. There comes a point where you can only take so much, and Nick needed out. He was just on the verge of sneaking away before his sister had caught him, but he sure wasn't that surprised when she offered to keep quite if he snuck her out with him.

Nick didn't hold back as he peeled down a near by road, reeving the engine loudly as he pushed the bike to its limits, shooting the engine as he came to a straight away, right next to the farm. At first, he hadn't noticed a thing, only being at the very limit of the acreage, but as he quickly covered the distance, something wrong started becoming very clear. Even with a glance as he raced by, the house looked as if it had been through hell, the front door, covered in claw marks, was laying out in front of the house, but he was going to fast to get a clear view through the door. But as he kept going by, the girl running out into field raced by his view, followed by someone crawling through the field.

"Hey, something's up, I'm pulling over!" Nick tried his best to make his voice vocal over the roaring engine, slowing them down before coming to a stop just near a row of trees. With a quick dismount, he pulled his guns out from the carrier on the bike. "Come on, you're not staying alone." Judging from the door from their drive by, a grimm was responsible for what happened. "Stay close, alright?"

With haste, the second year student from Atlas hurried along, heading to check up on the body crawling through the dirt and whoever it was heading out to her.

Eta should really have just had Nick drop her off somewhere, so she could call a friend to pick her up… She never liked his Motorcycle. It wasn’t practical at all, least of all with him being an Atlas student now. If his balls weren’t blue from a lack of girlfriend, than they sure as hell would shrivel up and turn blue during the winter season if he went out for a ride. At the thought of it her lips curled up and she chuckled faintly against his back, her arms wrapped around his body to hold herself in place as she watched the tree line fly past from beneath her helmet.

But, she had to be a responsible sister, for all the times she busts Nick’s balls over Quinton being better at something she didn’t want to make him truly feel unloved. After all, it was a rival sibling’s job to push the other to the brink of insanity and cruelly keep them dancing on the threshold of attending an asylum. So one evening out to make him not feel quite so alone was something that she happily oblige him for… At least until he opted to go driving out in the country side instead of getting wasted at a bar and letting her take embarrassing videos of him trying to hit on women.

“I swear if it’s your bladder, I will bring up stories of you wetting the bed the next time we go to a bar.” Eta responded as they came to a stop by a row of trees and watched him arm himself. Her own hand coming to rest idly on her sword hilt as she swung her legs over to sit facing the treeline. Fingers lightly tapping against the leatherclad hilt, eyebrow raising up at his next words.

Oh… right… he forgot he was merely a year older than herself. “Yaaa mid bro, you go do your thing and I’ll be… you know… on the comfortable seat, that is our only reasonable means of transportation. A bloody Tyrant could come storming out of those woods, and I’m far more likely to survive than you.” She responded, slipping over to the driver’s spot and turned the bike around. Having its headlights shinning towards both the field where the figures were moving and the nearby treeline before remaining seated as she pulled her scroll out to begin dialing for emergency services. “I’ll see if we get service out here, hope you remember your first aid bro.”

    Chardonnay's ears perked up as they caught the sounds of commotion in and around the farmhouse; seemed as though people were finally starting to show up. "Looks like they're finally here..." She muttered under her breath as she pulled out a cigarette and a particularly extravagant lighter, the casing of which appeared to be made out of pink marble and accented with gold fittings. She'd stumbled across the place nearly thirty minutes prior, but instead of investigating, she'd just been leaning idly up against the far wall of the house, waiting for people to arrive. "Took them long enough..." She grumbled derisively, lighting her cigarette with practiced ease before returning the lighter to her pocket, all in one fluid motion. "Guess it's time to get this show on the road..."

    She entered the house with an unusually casual gait, exuding an air of laid-back nonchalance that was wildly malapropos for a situation like this. Not even the stench of death seemed to phase her; on the contrary, she actually raised her nose and started sniffing the air, trying to get a better whiff of the malodorous scent so that she could figure out where it was coming from, and it didn't take her long to arrive at the kitchen. She shot Iodi a furtive glance as she stepped past the girl, studying her face for the briefest of moments before turning her attention to the grisly quartet of bodies that had been strewn about the room. "What's the matter, kid? This your first time seeing a dead body?" Whipping a posh pink scroll out of her pocket, Chardonnay began inspecting the corpses in turn, snapping several pictures of each as she went.

    "Definitely Beowolves, alright. Poor bastards didn't stand a chance. I guess that's just the sort of risk you run when you decide to live this far away from the city." Placing the cigarette to her lips, the girl took a long drag before exhaling deeply, releasing a large, billowing cloud of smoke from her lungs. The smoke itself had a rather peculiar aroma; like tobacco, but more...earthy. "These bodies are pretty fresh, too. Probably no more than a few hours old, if I had to guess. Chances are, the Grimm responsible for this are still somewhere nearby."

GRIMM ACTIVITY REPORTS
This was going to end badly. Very, very badly. From the large balcony of Capellam Mansion, Coquel observed the peculiar sight of a Beowolf pack making its way through the outskirts of the Agricultural District. Her blood ran cold and she trembled slightly as her mind raced through all possible scenarios of what could come of their presence. It was terrifying, even for her, despite the cannon fodder-like nature of the Beowolves themselves. No Alphas appeared to be present, which was both good and bad in her mind. After deliberating her options, Quel decided the best course of action would be to take up her Huntress duties and pursue the beasts, resolving to prevent them from harming the citizens of Vale.

Frantically, she made her way to the armory in the dark depths of the mansion, equipping her armor with a great deal of haste. Cendrillion was mounted on the wall, along with a satchel containing a couple dozen Dust crystals and throwing knives to be used in tandem with the sword. The Eternal Flame would certainly be her best bet at saving lives tonight. With staggering breath, Quel forced herself through a brief fit of overpowering anxiety before fastening the sword to her hip and rushing out of the mansion as quickly as she could.

The night would be her ally.

As a Faunus, her ability to see in the dark already put her ability to track the creatures of Grimm slightly ahead of her human counterparts. Other senses made this task even easier - her sense of smell, in particular. As she warily trailed the beasts, Quel would almost taste the negative emotions radiating off of them. What had drawn the Grimm to Vale? She had a feeling the answer was not one she wanted to have revealed to her. These were monsters drawn to the energy radiated by vast quantities of negativity. She had seen how easily this could be used against the people, the actions of her predecessors still fresh in her mind as she ran through the fields.

She might be the leader of the White Fang, but Coquel was not heartless.
She didn’t want to see innocent people suffer, no matter how “evil” she may have made herself out to be.

A farmhouse came into view, one out of place and modest compared to some of the other buildings in the area. It was well maintained, quaint in both appearance and overall energy. She admired the efforts of its owners from afar for a split second before she was violently snapped back to reality by pandemonium erupting within the home. Violent snarling and the sounds of gnashing teeth meshed with cries for help that made Quel’s heart sink. There were too many for her to take on by herself, but she had to do something. Trying as hard as she could to muster up the courage to enter the home, the sudden silence within caused her to become paralyzed with fear. Chills ran down her spine, so intense she felt like she’d be able to notice the mist of her breath with ease were it any colder.

Her heart racing, she swallowed down the heavy lump that had started forming in her chest, cautiously poking her head into one of the windows to see what had happened after the Grimm departed.

It was worse than she expected.

The bodies of the family lay strewn about the house, mangled by all sense of the word. It was...heartbreaking, to say the very least. It was an overwhelming blow to Quel’s psyche, and she found herself reeling back and covering her mouth to muffle the startled scream that came as a natural response. Tears swelled in her eyes, and a deep sense of guilt fell upon her. Why? Why had she not stepped in? Even if she had been killed in the process, the chances of the family surviving would have been much higher had she intervened. Her back pressed against the outside wall of the house, Coquel slowly sank to the ground and fought every inclination she felt to just burst into tears.

A sound within the building caught her attention.

Preparing for the worst, Quel drew Cendrillion and slowly raised her head to look into the house once again. A fifth member of the family, a girl, had survived the attack. She didn’t appear much younger than Coquel was, perhaps in her late teens. The wounds she had sustained would be difficult for anyone to pull through, even a seasoned Hunter. This girl clearly had much more to her than the eye was able to perceive. The horror she had experienced was still going to be fresh in her mind, making her a target for the creatures lurking in the night. Fear had kept Coquel from saving the rest of this family - she would not let it keep her from saving this girl.

The sounds of other people arriving on the scene pushed her to slip out the back of the house, hastily making way along the treeline in the direction the surviving girl had crawled off. The scent of blood lingered in the air, a cocktail of the deceased family and wounds of the girl. It was distracting from the scent of Grimm nearby. They were probably tracking the one that got away. Quel would have to remain vigilant if it meant saving her life. The sight of other people, the bulk of which appeared to be students, was a comforting one. At least, if things went south, Quel would not be alone in her efforts to fight off the monsters that were probably stalking them in the darkness.

She would have to draw their attention, somehow, to keep everyone on edge and ready for what was to come.
Perhaps even draw the Grimm out as well.

A tactic she had learned during her time at Beacon would be her means of doing so without directly compromising her location, approximately eighty yards from the surviving girl and the other who had gone to check on her.

Pulling one of the Red Dust crystals from her satchel, Coquel chucked it as hard as she could into the air in the direction of the girl and student that had rushed to check on her. Her eyes focused on the crystal, and in a quick motion she threw one of the knives at the gem, which struck it with a loud cling!

A ball of fire erupted, the volatile nature of the Dust being unleashed above the two girls in the field. She had to prepare for the burst to catch the Grimm's attention, which it surely would. She planned on it. This group would be able to make quick work of the beasts.

So long as they worked together.

...The scent of fear...

@Ciel
Ciel became aware of a motorcycle pulling up alongside the road, one of its riders jumping off to trot up behind her while the other turned the headlight of the bike to splay its light over the field. The girl had stopped crawling at the sound of footsteps coming up behind her. When Ciel finally reached the girl, though, she the light of hope in the daughter's eyes frozen. Frozen in the void of death; the girl had not even survived to turn onto her back and look up at Ciel.

@Iodi Crimson
The scent woud linger in her nose, on her person, and about her hair for hours, no doubt. The tile that was once white was now stained in red and gray, four corpses haphazardly strewn about the room where they were tossed aside by vicious Grimm.

@Nicholas Regium
Nicholas found himself with one other in the field, a second woman on her way from the direction of the farmhouse. Nicholas saw the crawling victim turn over, looking as if she was ready to speak to the young girl that stood over her—it was clear even from where he stood that she did not live to draw a breath while facing upright.

@Eta Carinae Regium
The light bathed the field in a soft yellow light, casting a strangely calming light on the scene of death presented. Where Eta stood, she could see the girl turn over, but it was not quite clear what had happened... save that the girl no longer moved after turning over.

@Chardonnay Baskerville
As Chardonnay entered the house, she just caught sight of another woman slipping out of the house, apparently there before her and already done with her exploration. The girls Chardonnay shared the room with had drastically different attitudes; one was quiet and aloof, the other more genuine, Chardonnay's query as to the girls' history with death seemingly spot on. The pictures saved to her scroll in all their gruesome glory, the memories of the incident now immortalized as pips of data.

@Amberleigh Sablier
The kitchen almost seemed to be wrought from pure death. Four bodies lay haphazardly strewn about the kitchen, a trail of blood leading Coquel out to the field. Two others were already on the scene, Coquel arriving just as the girl flopped over onto her front. Already dead, before she even hit her back.

@All
An explosion of dist lit up the field with a bright corona or crimson and rent the air with a deep, bass-toned crack! For the better part of a minute, nothing happened. The night was quiet and, though somber and sprinkled with the loss of life, calm. And then, abruptly, the calm was shattered by a piercing howl. A single, clarion tone that was immediately followed by a chorus of off-key, grotesque ululations. The treeline, better than two hundred yards out, was broken by the figure of a Beowolf, flopping out of the trees and beginning to run towards them with its signature awkward, loping gait.

Another appeared shortly thereafter. Then two more. Then six more. Then more than a dozen at a time, until the woods were veritably pouring out dark forms with glowing garnet eyes. It would be less than fifteen seconds before that first, leading wolf was on top of them, and only a few seconds after that before the pack hit them with its full force.

Ciel had reached her hand out to help the poor girl, slowing down and crumbling as it quickly dawned on her that it was too late. In fact, Ciel hadn't even noticed the other student approaching her, too deep in her distraught thoughts to notice her surroundings as of current, she'd let out a small whimper, on the verge of tears. Feelings she'd never felt before in her entire life had suddenly been forced onto her, never had the kitten witnessed the loss of a life before, and especially never before had she felt such a great weight upon herself, guilt, remorse, absolute horror. It was a completely maddening experience to the Faunus, she felt... useless.

A strike of blazing crimson shot out into the sky, painting the empty fields and forest with an ardent red, an explosion akin to cannon-fire had snapped Ciel out of her thoughts, scaring her enough to cause her to jump, she felt as if her heart would leap out of her chest from the sheer shock. It had done wonders for the Faunus, the sudden noise had snapped her out of the dark thoughts for now, quickly preparing her. It wasn't long before the Beowulves begun to pour out from the forest, a tidal wave of shadows and teeth. Ciel stared for a moment, gathering up her strength and steeling her resolve as she wiped away her tears.

"We'll make them pay." she said strongly, her eyes blazing with determination. To Ciel, it felt like more than a mission at this point, the swirl of emotions that had begun as fear and sadness had strengthened her resolve. Ciel had begun firing her pistol into the swarm of Beowulves, drawing the second of her pair of pistols, unloading several shots into the sea of death as she back-tracked towards the household, keeping track of who she could, and keeping her distance, knowing she was no match in close quarters.

Grimm Activity Reports
Take a look into my eyes one last time
Her heart was beating faster. She had to try remain calm but it was hard looking at what must have been once clean white tiles now stained blood red. He breathing stronger, focus wavering slightly as the sight was still in front of her and being processed by her mind. She missed the fact that someone had walked up behind her till she heard the voice. She seemed so calm, almost like she was familiar with these type of situations. That or just at ease at looking at such a loss of life. As she turned her head slowly to look in the direction of the voice she saw a far shorter girl than her but was hard to tell what her age was. Clearly looking at how she was dressed seemed to indicate that she might be from a rich family. Especially when seeing her scroll emerge from her pocket.

“Ur…. well” Iodi mumbled under her breath but still loud enough that Chardonnay would hear it. Then she saw the girl going round taking pictures of each of the four corpses that where around the room, still laying in the places that the beowolves had left them when they tossed them aside. How could she be taking pictures at a time like this. “Hey, you should respect the dead. No need to take pictures on them in this state.” They deserved that much. Her legs where still shivering as she finally took a step forward to the body of what could have been the father of the family. She got down to her knees and moved her hand over his face to close his eyelids. The lifeless eyes had been ingrained in the back of her head but she knew that there was nothing that could have been done by her. He was at peace.

Her breathing started to return closer to her normal levels though that was interrupted by her coughing at the light smoke that had filled the air from the cigarette. She had listened to what she had been saying the whole time. Grimm being close by was not the biggest revelation in her eyes. However, she thought that she heard a sound of an engine from outside the house. Maybe she had just been hearing things. Her state was still a bit shaken though she was starting to slowly get a grip round what she had seen. Yet, the stench still lingered.

“Well, if they are still about first thing we need to work out is the number there are.” Iodi responded after the other girl had finished speaking. But, before she could say anything else, such as what her name was, there was the sound on an explosion that came from outside. She lost what she had been about to say as she instinctively moved her hands to grab her Crescent Rings as she rushed through the house, navigating though the devastation, towards where the sound had originated. As she emerged from the door she saw what was the tail end of the flash. The night returned taking over the fields with darkness before the glowing eyes of the Grimm started to appear from the treeline.

Better night vison was at least one good thing about being a faunus. It made it easier to see the Grimm but at the rate they began to emerge from the forest she started to lose count. Her heart rate rose quickly again as panic at the number of Grimm started to get her worried. With only two people it would be had to fend off this many. Her close quarters combat would also be a challenge with it being so open outside in the fields.

Suddenly, she heard the gun fire which drew her attention to a girl that seemed to be trying to make her way back to the house. She would be safer to stay here but Iodi knew that she would need help if she was to make it back to the slightly more secure house. Well, not sure how secure it would be with this amount of Grimm. She knew what she had to do. She ran, her weapons held behind her as she changed past to stand between Ciel and the Grimm.

“Fall back to the house.” Iodi screamed as she stood as a barrier. She was no use at long range so it was going to mean that she was going to be in a risky situation when they reached them. “I shall follow behind you.”
