Join the ranks of Remnant’s prestigious Academies as you fight to protect the Four Kingdoms from the clutches of the evil Creatures of Grimm. Alternatively, you may work towards bringing the world to its knees by fighting against the last sparks of humanity. IT LINGERS.
It was all going to start with a ride in this shitty van.

Tonight was shaping up to be a far more difficult mission than Rochelle had intended. She had grown accustomed to fighting in all manner of environments, but class? Never before had she needed to oversee a class when it was so dark and stormy. Typical, she thought, that the task of investigating a series of Grimm reports would be so gloomy. Were it not for the light pattering of the rain on the armored van, she may have drifted off into her thoughts. Shifting through the student dossiers, Rochelle shuffled in her seat. The sheer amount of impatience was easy to note on her face, even she couldn't deny that.

After reading through the last of the files, Rochelle's eyes rose and settled on her students. Was this the best Atlas had to offer tonight? Releasing an exasperated sigh, she brought her hands to her ponytail to remove the ribbon in her hair. It wasn't a common occurrence, being she favored the hair-up look more. Still, Rochelle had her days - her nights even - and figured this would be one of them. The Hound rested at her side, propped up against the wall. After a brief moment of reminiscence, she looked over at the students with a smile.

"So, class," she said as she cleared her throat. "Let's go over the mission before we arrive. I want each of you to be up to speed before things get chaotic." Reaching into her satchel, Rochelle retrieved four salmon colored folders. She then stood, moving across the van to each of the students and handing them each a folder. As she did so, she listed off their names, just in case they weren't familiar with one another. "Aeenmae Fontine, Kurenai Renya, Nordin Reecendo, and Alex Forest," she said before returning to her seat. "Get to know one another if you don't already. Teamwork on this mission is imperative and I will have no lone wolves in my class."

With that, she motioned them to open up the folders before reading some of the contents. "A series of reports have come in saying the creatures of Grimm have been targeting the mines," she read. "Workers, equipment, it's the usual 'Grimm destroy everything' scenario, but..." She tapped hard on the page, directing their attention to the image of a hulking shadow. The quality was terrible, but it was clear whatever this thing was, it wasn't normal. "This is what we're looking for in particular. The mission? Obviously to kill it," Rochelle continued. "No one has gotten a good look at it yet, so it could be your run-of-the-mill Grimm, but it never hurts to be careful."

After a brief moment of silence, Rochelle turned the page of the folder before she continued. "It's important that we stay together during this mission, kids," she added in a serious tone. "Atlas can't afford to lose any more people to whatever is happening out there." The rest of the folder was, in Rochelle's opinion, irrelevant to the mission. Just snippets of eye-witness testimony and the like. She never paid attention to such things, nor did she want her students to. In all her experience, sweating the small stuff was the easiest way of getting oneself killed.

Her attention shifted to a flash outside. Lightning, no doubt. Maybe that would make things a little more interesting? Getting struck by a stray bolt, she heard, was quite the experience. The thought brought out a slight chuckle, even a laugh. She stared for some time before her attention returned to the students. It was going to be a long night, that was a certainty. Leaning back against the wall, Rochelle brought her arms behind her head. Might as well take the chance to relax, right? Never know when, or even if, you'll get the chance to do so again.

"Any questions before we get there?" She asked with a yawn. "Now is the time to ask, if you do."

Search and destroy all wrapped up in the veil of a class field trip, in the dead of night. Sounded like Tuesdays to Renya. It wasn't that he found the concept of the mission Neto forced him into (for the sake of building his team skills since he didn't play nice with his teammates) boring. Its that Grimm weren't really all that big a deal to him. Well, most grimm anyway. Bigger, nastier things that typically required a team to take on still posed a challenge since it was likely they could force him into higher, unsafe levels of his semblance. At the end of the day though Renya was confident that there wasn't a grimm out there that could push him into a corner like a real, living, human being could.

That, of course, though was no excuse to slack off and take it easy. That was exactly how confidence turned to arrogance. Renya might be a bit overconfident at times but he wasn't arrogant in his own abilities. He always maintained a healthy level of skepticism. Not that he ever said as much or made any effort to debase those around him of the notion that he was anything more than a cocky punk. It worked in his benefit. In his mind the more people around him wrote him off as overly self-assured brat the more fun it was to prove just how skilled and lethal he was.

At this point he was pretty sure the only person in Titan who even stood a chance of going more than two minutes against him being serious was some doucher named Sol. He heard some stories about the second year floating around. None of them painted a particularly flattering picture of the guy. Everything Renya had personally looked into though told him the guy was strong. Strong enough that at some point he was going to have to pay him a visit and see if he lived up to the hype and was worth his respect. Besides him though he was fairly confident in the fact that, outside of the teacher leading this mission, that he was the most skilled and mentally prepared combatant in this tin can.

Which is exactly why he listened to every word she said without question. Renya had justifiably earned his reputation as a rabble rouser who disrespected authority. It was also true that most authoritative figures had done little to actually EARN their positions of power. Neto was an odd case where Renya liked to needle him purely out of amusement. Renya held a deep respect for Titan's headmaster; he earned it in spades. Renya just didn't want Neto's time as a headmaster to be boring. In the case of Rochelle Renya just had this feeling in his gut that, without even crossing fists with her, she could put his ass to the pavement and make him see sky. So he'd be a good little bear and listen.

As for the rest of the jokers in the van? Until he actually saw them fight he regarded them as more of a hindrance than a help. Niceties could come when they proved they weren't just dead weight. So Renya mostly pretended to not hear how Rochelle asked them to get a long as a team. Instead he chose to focus on the dossier he had been handed. The blurry image of the big grimm caught his eye. "Looks like an ursa, and a big one at that. Maybe not though. Ursa major don't usually grow to the size of bulldozers and this thing looks to be pretty f**king huge. They're a violent bunch of grimm though so its probably more accurate to say most don't get that big because they don't live long enough to. We could be dealing with a cautious one. That's no fun. Its better when they're reckless. Makes it easier to cave their skulls in." Renya cracked his knuckles.

He was suddenly looking forward to this a lot more.

Mae sat next to Rochelle, summarily cementing her dibs on shotgun as the senior student in the car. She had made light of it, but in reality she was interested in having the vantage without being blocked by the seats.

As the van plodded along the dreary roads, Aeenmae glanced up and down between the road and her scroll, continually keeping track of their geographic location so that she could navigate her way back should the weather turn further and kill their data connection. She was not the most navigationally sound individual, and she accepted that sacrifice so she could have her good looks instead.

Smirking at her own internal monologue, she turned her attention to the one speaking. Renya, if she remembered right. "Big-ass Grimm?" She mused for a handful of moments, mulling the idea about in her head. "Yeah, I dunno. Looks way too big to be an Ursa, that's for sure. Dun' look like anything we've seen before, though." She brought that image up on her scroll and twisted in her place to flash it to the back seat. "Might just be the camera angle that makes it so big, but ether way this looks way too big for an Ursa, you're right."

She righted herself and retracted her scroll, tapping through the menus to image sharing settings. As she pressed send, she idly murmured, "I'mma send it off to Meda, see what he says about it," before reopening her navigation application and continuing to mark their course.

She could not say she was much troubled by the idea of fighting Grimm, but this one had her thinking hard. The familiarity with Beowolves and Ursa had set in years ago, and while fighting a being that was trying to rip out your throat always brought with it the thrill of combat, fighting a new type of Grimm, without being able to rely on near-programmed knowledge, would be a process she had not undergone in years. Mae was nervous, but that those nerves balanced on the knife's edge of excitement.

As long as no one died along the way, she assumed this would be a ride to remember. As such, she fished a silver flask out of her jacket and flipped the top, wiggling it towards Rochelle after knocking back a splash for herself. "F'it catches your fancy, have at it. Good Valean stuff, no age but it's nice and mellow." She jerked her head back towards the rear seat. "If you're good, I'm good for them to ease their nerves a little."

Nordin sat comfortably in the back of the van as he listened silently to the briefing of his and his partner's first mission, a simple run into the mines to investigate reports of Grimm activity. It seemed fairly ordinary when put that way, but it was their target that made the mission not-so-normal. It was an unknown Grimm, the only information they have on it being a low-quality image of it, and it seemed the unanimous thought was that it was an Ursa of sorts. Nordin held his chin, pondering. "If it is an Ursa, then we will know how to handle this. However, that is presuming it is an Ursa to begin with." He closed his eyes, allowing himself to concentrate as he thought. "An Ursa is a Grimm bear, which is exactly what makes me somewhat skeptical that our quarry is such a beast. Why would a creature of Grimm most prominently found in forests be occupying an underground mine?" He could only assume others would ask him what he proposed it was, if not an Ursa, to which he simply waited for a silent moment, stating simply, "I do not know..."

As the party of students exchanged opinions on the matter at hand, Nordin glanced to the teacher at the front of the van. "Professor Eisenheim, I do have one question regarding our mission. Rather, not so much the mission itself, but our party. You said that we must all work together, but I can guarantee many of us will have differing ideas on what would be the best move at any given situation. Since we are a group of strangers, perhaps we should appoint a team leader for the duration of this mission. What are your thoughts, Professor?"

Alex yawned a bit as she sat in the van, traversing the dark and dreary road as they approached the query. She was only awake because the professor had decided that now would be an excellent time to go over the mission briefing...and to be fair, she was right. Still, it was funny seeing how much she wasn't exactly the happiest about this, and she barely shrugged. She was more excited to finally be out on her first mission! Sure it was only with Nordin, but it still counted! Speaking of which, she was in the back of the vehicle next to him. She'd wanted to sit closer to the front to hopefully make a bigger impression on the teacher, but noooooooo Mr. Personality of course wanted to sit in the back. Of course she could've left him to sit there, but they were partners and she'd respect her team leader's decision. Besides, it's best to look like the coherent unit they pretended to be on their first outing.

Huh, oh right, there's some new Grimm or something. Alex took a glance over Nordin's shoulder to look at it, before shrugging. It seemed like the consensus was either an Ursa of some kind or some new breed, or at least a less well known one. "Does it really matter what kind of Grimm it is?" She shrugged. "If it's an Ursa, cool we know what to do. If it's not, we won't and it'll be more difficult. I suppose if we're looking for this specific one it would help finding it, but otherwise not sure it's all too important to know what exactly it is." She shrugged. then she heard her partner bring up team leaders and she couldn't help but chuckle.

"Really Nordin, going for the power grab already?" The young woman half-teased before looking up. "I mean, yeah having one person in charge is a good idea and all I'm pretty sure Eisenheim already fits the bill." She smirked, going back to another yawn as she shook her head to clear it.

IT LINGERS.
Rochelle's eyes remained on the files in her hand, listening as each of the students took the time to speak up. It was more or less what she expected, a bit of puffing up here and there while noting some of the details of the file. Everyone seemed particularly drawn to the image of the supposed Grimm, which she expected. They were kids, after all, and were training to fight these beasts as a profession. She couldn't judge them for singling out that one detail. A slight smirk formed on her face, and her eyes shot up and glossed over the group before returning to the folder..

"It's not an Ursa, that much is certain." She commented, brushing her hair behind her ear. "If it were, there's a good chance this mission wouldn't be as important and time sensitive." The flask sliding across the floor did little to draw her attention away from her reading. Still reading, Rochelle caught the silver flask with her foot, kicking it back to its owner. "Never been much of a drinker, Aeenmae." She replied. "In fact, I think alcohol is a poor choice of pre-mission beverage." With a yawn Chelle closed the folder, tossing it aside before leaning back and crossing her legs..

Professor Eisenheim..

The word slapped before her surname caused her to cringe as she shook her head. "No need for the formalities, Nordin. Call me Rochelle, Chelle, or Ro." She said to the boy, crossing her arms as she glanced out the window. "And if that doesn't work, then Ms. Eisenheim works just fine. I'd just prefer you not refer to me as Professor." The question of leadership for the group struck her as a little odd. Was Chelle's leadership not enough? Scoffing a bit at the comment, she looked out the window for a time before turning her head back to the class..

The girl, one of the boy's teammates, seemed to get it. Rochelle had no doubt the eldest of the team had drawn the conclusion as well.

"Alex is correct, and you'll be right to save that to memory as soon as possible," Rochelle said with a grin. "I will be leading the team. With something this important, it's imperative that we do things right and error-free." She nodded thankfully in the girl's direction before returning her attention to the window. The storm was beginning to come down hard. Rain pelted the van, the sound reverberating throughout the space the five of them sat in. From time to time, the flash of lightning and the peal of thunder came as well. It shook the van, enough to rattle the nerves of anyone ill prepared.

It was time to have a little fun with these kids.

"Have you kids heard the stories about the Grimm that lives out in these parts?" She queried with a grin. "Not like the Ursa, or the Beowolves, or anything else you've ever seen. I'm talking about the Telltale." She eyed the class, waiting to hear whatever response might come from the name. The stories of the beast weren't very well known, but it was likely that Atlas natives had head the story of the supposed soul breaking Grimm.

As far as Chelle was concerned, it was just a story.

Not an Ursa huh? Renya's inscrutable gaze remained transfixed on the image. Ignoring all idle banter around him the fiery red head put his cunning mind to work in garnering details from the image that only someone like him, with the evolved eyes of a faunus, could do. It was... difficult to say the least. Even getting an approximate size was hard. What he could say though was it was big, very big. Bigger than an ursa major. It filled the space it took up like a living shadow with no discernible features. It wasn't a winged grimm, that much he knew. That ruled out the Nightterror. Thank god for that.

So what was it?

Renya put the photo down and decided to flip through some of the eye witness reports to see if he could knock loose a hint or two. Small details that were often overlooked were critical to consider. He put the air of an idiot on but he was no fool. Overlooking even the smallest thing could lead to an early grave. As far as he could tell though all the reports seemed to describe a different beast. The differed so wildly that....

....

"I think this thing might be able to adjust its shape to a high degree. Like an octopus or cuttlefish." Renya announced out of the blue. He finally set the folder down and rejoined the conversation at large. Chel was trying to spook them with talk about the Telltale. Renya only had one thing to say on the matter.

"Truth is usually stranger than fiction. Maybe this thing we're getting sent to deal with IS the Telltale. Fun."

"Telltale..." Mae leaned back in her seat and stared up at the roof of the cab with a deflating sigh. "Shit, that'd be a helluva thing."

"The Telltale is a beast of myth." Mae's mind drifted to Altimeda's description of the terror, one she had heard quite some time ago but had stuck fast. "It attacks the body like any other Grimm, but after it's through your Aura, it starts attacking... deeper. Never really tries to kill you, though. Leaves you alive, after sucking out your soul. You wander for a while, listless, soulless, and eventually it all starts getting to you. Most turn into a Grimm themselves, in the end."

Mae muttered, "I don't much care for being turned into a Grimm..." to herself, shaking her head out to clear those images and that story before pocketing the flask and returning to her scroll. "Well, if it's really a Telltale then we fuckin' kill it and get out. Never heard of a Grimm that could change its size, but I wouldn't be surprised if they exist, I guess. Altimeda'd want to hear about that one, though," she added thoughtfully, tabbing over to her messaging app and beginning to tap away at the screen.

"F'you guys have anything you want to ask Dr. Fontine, now's the time," she offered, shooting a glance back at those in the seats behind her. "He's got a shitton of access and he isn't trapped in a van rolling through the middle of nowhere."
